Terrifying moment thugs armed with a shotgun smashed their way into house in broad daylight - while the occupants were at home

The masked gang carried out the raid in broad daylight while the occupants were at home. In shocking footage recorded on cameras outside the property, the four thugs were seen pulling up on the drive in Romford, Essex, before smashing their way into the house. The gang arrived at the house in two cars - a black convertible Porsche and a black Mercedes -before charging towards the front door (right). Meanwhile, one of the burglars started smashing up an external CCTV camera, flashing an expensive watch at the lens in the process (left). The three people who lived in the property were at home at the time. Police said the residents, who are in their 20s and 30s, sustained minor injuries from the broken glass.

Saved... for now: Cecil the lion's cubs are being protected by his BROTHER after fears rival male will kill them and take over the pride, says Oxford University expert

After Cecil's death in Zimbabwe, there were fears that his cubs would be killed by the next lion in the hierarchy, a male named Jericho (pictured, left, fighting Cecil), so he could father his own offspring with the females. But a team at Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Unit, which had been studying Cecil before he was shot dead, said the lion's brother was safeguarding the young. Project leader David Macdonald said: 'As you probably know, the natural law in lion society is that when a male dies and his weakened coalition is usurped, the new incoming males kill their predecessors' cubs. This may not happen because Cecil's brother is still holding the fort.' The much-loved lion was killed by American dentist Walter Palmer (inset) earlier this month, sparking outrage around the world.

Wing flap washed up on Indian Ocean island IS from a Boeing 777, confirms Malaysia Airlines - as experts claim BARNACLES could pinpoint site of MH370's black box

The section of wreckage washed up on La Reunion, inset, was confirmed as being from a Boeing 777 - the same type of aircraft which vanished over the Indian Ocean in March 2014. However, French air crash investigators have carefully packaged the section of wing, pictured, and loaded it onto an Air France jet, so it can undergo forensic examination which should confirm it was part of the missing aircraft.

Teenage fraudster who mocked judge on Facebook after admitting £110,000 swindle is jailed as judge tells him he should be 'ashamed'

Sam Cook (pictured) had boasted of turning a £2,000 investment into £21million, a court heard. Today he was jailed for more than two years after he admitted swindling £110,000 from six victims. But the judge warned that clams the 18-year-old was remorseful were belied by a mocking photograph which was posted on Facebook following his guilty plea (top). The court was shown a picture of Cook and his father dressed up as a judge and a police officer.

Your summer holidays have gone up in smoke: New blow to British families caught up in Calais migrant chaos as striking ferry workers block roads with burning tyres

Striking French ferry workers set fire to the roads (pictured) leading to the port of Calais, blocking the port off with a wall of burning tyres in the latest wave of disruption faced by British tourists. People heading for France for their summer holidays already face travel chaos as they contend with the migrant crisis (inset) in Calais and Operation Stack in Kent. The crisis has forced some British families to cancel their holidays, while others are changing their travel plans to avoid the French port. Meanwhile thousands of British tourists could be diverted onto ferries instead of using the Channel Tunnel.

Send in the Army! ANOTHER 1,500 migrants storm the Channel Tunnel - including one crushed to death by a truck - as calls are made for the military to be drafted in to search vehicles for stowaways

The latest mass security breach comes after 2,200 migrants tried to gain entry to Eurotunnel's French terminal on Monday, causing chaos for holidaymakers and freight traffic on both sides of the Channel. The dead migrant, a Sudanese man in his 20s or early 30s, was hit by a lorry which was preparing to drive on to a train overnight. France has since drafted in an extra 120 police officers to help secure the terminals as Eurotunnel revealed it had now blocked more than 37,000 such attempts by migrants since January. Meanwhile, Home Secretary Theresa May has chaired a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency committee to address the escalating crisis. Girl who lost her leg in Alton Towers accident celebrates her 18th birthday with her boyfriend who was also seriously injured in the rollercoaster crash

Leah Washington was one of four people seriously injured when two carriages collided on the Smiler ride at the theme park in Staffordshire. The teenager, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, had her left leg amputated above the knee and suffered a fractured hand in the incident. But, following an incredible recovery, Miss Washington was last week discharged from hospital, just in time to celebrate her milestone birthday. Last night, she posted a picture of her and boyfriend Joe Pugh, 18 (pictured left), captioned: '18th birthday', which showed the pair smiling during a celebratory meal. She also posted a photo of her with two friends in a lift (top right), adding 'Love my friends'. During the crash, Mr Pugh faced life-changing injuries when his knees were shattered. He now faces months of intensive physiotherapy. Mr Pugh has previously described how the crash, which took place on June 2, brought the pair closer together. They had been on their first date when their carriage, which was carrying 16 people, ploughed at 20mph into an empty car that had been left on the track (pictured, and circled, bottom right).

Has MH370 finally been found? Debris is found floating in Indian Ocean - 3,500 miles from the doomed flight's last known location

A piece of wreckage washed up on a beach in the Indian Ocean could be part of the doomed Malaysian Airlines jet MH370 which vanished in 2014, it has emerged. The two-metre-long piece of wreckage, which seemed to be part of a wing, was found by people cleaning up a beach in La Reunion, east of Madagascar. One witness said: 'It was covered in shells, so one would say it had been in the water a long time.' French air transport officials have already opened a probe to investigate where the wreckage could have come from. Xavier Tytelman, an expert in aviation security, said it could not be ruled out that the wreckage belonged to MH370, which vanished without trace in March last year. No part of the wreckage has ever been found in one of aviation's great mysteries and Malaysian authorities in January declared that all on board were presumed dead. The plane disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. Tytelman noted that local media photos showed 'incredible similarities between a #B777 flaperon and the debris found,' refering to a Boeing 777 - the type of plane that disappeared.

The luxury life of a gangster's moll: Girlfriend of murdering drug dealer who bragged about first-class flights and lavish New York shopping sprees is jailed for laundering his dirty cash

Courtney Randles (top), 26, lived a champagne lifestyle in a luxury apartment in Liverpool while her boyfriend Christopher Kenny worked as a major drug dealer across the UK. Despite earning an £18,000 salary, Randles posted selfies from transatlantic flights and bragged about her shopping sprees online, posting photos of bursting Juicy Couture bags (bottom right). When police raided the couple's flat, they also found £62,000 (bottom left) stashed behind a bathroom mirror. Randles has now been jailed for three years and four months after pleading guilty to money laundering. The court heard how the council worker was aware of her boyfriend's trade and tried to flee the country with him, while carrying £7,000 in her handbag. She even contacted a Euromillions winner to see if she would help launder money on the couple's behalf, the court was told. Kenny was sentenced to a life term earlier this year after stabbing Anthony Duffy, another drug dealer, to death.

Back on the streets of Britain, fanatic who 'inspired 7/7': Convicted terrorist returns to the UK to celebrate Eid festival just days after his release from US prison

Former computer engineer and Islamist extremist Babar Ahmad slipped back into Britain last week to celebrate the Eid festival with his parents, staying in their south-west London maisonette. The 41-year-old was jailed for 12 and a half years last July after he was extradited to America. Once in the US, he pleaded guilty to providing material to support terrorism online despite having previously protested his innocence. His website has been blamed for inspiring a generation of terrorists - including the gang behind the July 7 bombings in London in 2005. He was freed last month after the authorities took into account his eight years in custody in the UK fighting extradition and his time in solitary confinement in America awaiting trial.

Lord Sewel, 69, eagerly boasted of having sex with the young BBC presenter and described the encounter, which took place in an attic, as a 'one off' because 'she was happily married.' His third wife Jennifer, 54, kept a dignified but low profile at their £1million home in Scotland today as photographs emerged of her husband in a prostitute's orange bra. She let it be known that he was 'not expected' to return to their marital home. Sewel's children have also retreated from the limelight by locking down their social media accounts.

Judges say your will can be IGNORED: Landmark ruling awards this woman £160,000 of her mother's fortune - despite her leaving it all to animal charities

Lawyers fear the landmark legal ruling that saw Heather IIott (above) of Great Munden, Hertfordshire, overturn her mother's will could undermine the right of people to leave their assets to who they wish. Melita Jackson decided not to leave a single penny for her 54-year-old daughter and even wrote a letter explaining why she would not benefit from the estate. But the Court of Appeal ruled that her daughter is entitled to a chunk of the money. The court had been told how Mrs Ilott was struggling for money and wanted to buy her housing association property (inset).

An attack on a woman who wore a bikini in a park in northern France has sparked a furious campaign on Twitter. Hundreds of social media users posted photos of themselves in swimsuits in public places in a backlash to the attack, which has been likened to the JeSuisCharlie backlash following the Charlie Hebdo shootings in January. Police said the attackers came from housing estates with large Muslim populations which has sparked claims that the attack was religiously-motivated. The three eldest attackers have been named by French newspapers as Ines Nouri, Zohra Karim and Hadoune Tadjouri, but the 16- and 17-year-olds involved remain anonymous.

Did missing Conley die after becoming trapped inside a pipe? Seven-year-old's devastated grandmother reveals youngster's tragic death after body is found on building site near his home

Conley Thompson (pictured with his mother Paula, left) had not been seen since last night, when he set off for home after playing with friends at Locke Park in Barnsley. His disappearance prompted a huge police search, but this morning officers revealed construction workers had found a child's body at a building site, just half a mile from Conley's home in the Worsbrough area of the town. Conley's grandmother, Deborah Fraser (centre inset) visited the site today, where dozens have left floral tributes - including a young boy (main). A police officer also broke down in tears at the scene (right) as she took flowers from members of the public to lay at the scene. Speaking at the site this afternoon, Ms Fraser described her grandson as 'good as gold' and a 'little bundle of fun' as she revealed how his body was found inside a pipe - leading to fears he was trapped and 'must have died trying to get out'.
